Incidents with First Generation Tube Tower Mounts

Gaia-Wind values all of our turbine owners whether they have purchased directly from us or otherwise.  Following reports of a very small number of incidents involving what was the “First Generation” of tube tower mounts for our turbines, we would like to keep all our turbine owners informed as to the action Gaia-Wind has taken.

During the very severe weather conditions over the winter, a small number of First Generation tube towers have blown over. Our investigations suggest that the most probable cause is foundation fastening rods coming loose; but that there is no inherent problem with the turbine itself. While this issue does not affect the overwhelming bulk of our fleet of many hundreds of turbines, a small proportion, namely our first generation tube towers are potentially affected.

We have taken the following action to assist and reassure owners of this group of towers:

  • Gaia-Wind has advised some owners, as a precaution, to place their turbine on a reduced operating window. 
  • Gaia-Wind has, for our direct customers, conducted an inspection of the fastening system, and, in the case of indirect customers,  advised the intermediary reseller to do the same. The outcome of such inspections may result in us recommending an upgrade to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of those turbines.
  • Where units are out of warranty, Gaia-Wind and any reseller have nonetheless agreed  to meet a significant part of the cost of upgrade.

The First Generation tube tower and foundation was designed to the prevailing engineering standard of the time (DS410/412) and certified by Riso/Elsam in Denmark. This standard  was superseded in early 2011 and this First Generation tube tower design is no longer available for sale or installation. Our Second Generation towers are designed to current industry standards reflecting the development of more demanding design protocols in this field.
